Oh. How sad. I'm a tree hugger, too. A tree of ours just up and died - it was a city tree & they came to "take it away". I got all misty when I came home to the stump. Everything changed - the light, the view, the privacy.
Rest in Peace, ol' Giving Tree.
And the tree was happy.

Sorry about your tree. It was a beauty, but a terror too.
